Current Position:

Assistant Director of Forestry, Southwestern Region, USDA Forest Service

Education:

Bachelor of Science 1965 Iowa State University, Ames – Forestry
Additional Studies (no degree) Oklahoma State University, 1965.

Management Interests:

My primary focus is on understanding the pre-European settlement function of southwestern forested ecosystems and applying this knowledge to managing for sustainability of these ecosystems today. I have studied old photographs and reports from the 1800s and early 1900s as well as inventories from the early 1900s. I have also read from studies of tree rings and other field information to develop the best understanding possible of past condition and function of southwestern forests, especially ponderosa pine forests. I have compared past condition and function to condition and function today and, noting the wide difference, am working to implement treatments to move today’s forests toward historic condition and function.
